The Geek Within

Last week, as I was sitting on the couch in my ‘Doctor Who’ PJ’s, watching ‘Stargate: The Arc of Truth’ on the television, and using my multitasking skills to simultaneously buy Season One of ‘Firefly’ on Amazon, download ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog’ from iTunes, and reading ‘Smallville’ episode summaries on wikipedia, I had an epiphany.
I’m a geek.
I’m not entirely sure when it happened, or when owning a sonic screwdriver became something that I wanted to achieve... but the pure and simple truth (while rarely simple, and never pure) is, that I, Jacey, am a geek.

And when did being a geek become cool? When did it stop being the world of gangly guys in too short pants, suspenders and glasses? (Well, yes I DO have glasses. But only for reading. And because they’re pretty and purple.)
My point is - being a geek is no longer this horrible thing. It’s not something that’s going to make you an outcast. Infact, everyone wants to be a little smarter, a little more focused... and a little more geeky these days.

The thing is, I’m still something of a rarity among my friends. They’re more interested in the latest fashion, what Brad/Angelina/Jen drama just happened, or heaven forbid - what the best kind of laundry detergent is.
I doubt any of my friends have ever watched a single episode of ‘Doctor Who’ - let alone heard of ‘Torchwood’. Which is a shame, because ‘Torchwood’ is the cool person’s ‘Doctor Who’. No, really. It’s the sexy, risque, hormone injected version of the slightly geekier, spoofier ‘DW’. For starters, you’ve got the scrumptiously hot Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).... and well, that’s really all you need. The show would be fine with just Jack storming around in his great coat, pulling guns from hidden places. The rest of the cast is an added bonus.

I don’t think any of my friends have watched an episode of ‘Stargate’ (either SG1 or Atlantis) since it was still cool to watch that kind of thing with your Dad on a Sunday evening. (Wait... it was NEVER cool to do that?!) None of them would be nearly excited as I was when Vala (the always awesome Claudia Black) and Cameron (the delightfully hot Ben Browder) joined the SG1 team....
Which then leads us into the fact that NONE of my friends would have even HEARD of ‘Farscape’. Which is just as well, because that show is just plain confusing. Don’t get me wrong. I love it. But it took a while. The first episode I saw was the first episode of Season Three. Not a good place to start. I didn’t get it. I didn’t like it. And I didn’t understand why everyone was dressed in strange alien costumes, or why there were puppets...
So a year later, I tried again, starting with Season One. And that was possibly my first mistake. I’ve seen nearly every episode now.... imagine all the other things I could have been doing instead of watching puppets and aliens prance around in a spaceship that’s alive.

Don’t even get me started on Smallville. It’s possibly one of the cooler geek shows out there. I mean, hello Tom Welling. But still, it’s the geek side of it that appeals to me. Um, and the romance that is Lois and Clark.
A shop near me has put out a range of Wonder Woman t-shirts. (Why no, I didn’t buy all of them. I bought 3 out of the 4 versions.) Am I the only one who wishes they’d do a Lois and Clark range too?

Does anyone remember ‘Buffy’? As in the Vampire Slayer, not that vapid soccer mom that lives down the street... (can you believe that people actually give their kids names like Buffy, Bubbles and Babs?)
Rememeber Joss Whedon, the guy who created Buffy? Yeah, me too. But not for Buffy related reasons. ‘Firefly’. Yes, that’s right. ‘Firefly’. BEST SHOW EVER.
I mean, who but Joss could create a show that was essentially a space western with hookers and preachers, and have it WORK. (Over looking the fact that it was canceled after one season... hey, we got our BDM (big damn movie)...) Who but Joss?
And then there’s ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog’. In one word? Wait, two. Captain Hammer. Look it up.

So, my advice?
Embrace your inner geek. It’ll only make you happy.
